Tohunga Kirituhi - Hongi the scholar

The author took the opportunity to access and read two of the first-ever Maori-English texts, A Korau no New Zealand (Thomas Kendall 1815), and A Grammar and Vocabulary of the Language of New Zealand (Prof. Samuel Lee 1820) at the Australian National Library, Canberra.

Missionary Thomas Kendall (with help from his Maori colleagues) published the first Maori-English text 'A Korao no New Zealand' in 1815, in Sydney, Australia. Kendall and Hongi Hika travelled to England, where they assisted the Professor Samuel Lee, of Queens' College, to compile 'A Grammar and Vocabulary of the Language of New Zealand in 1820, in Cambridge, U.K.
